Three US Masters Athletes Win WMA 2019 Honors; Five Others are Runners Up

World Masters Athletics (WMA), the international governing body of masters track & field, announced its annual Athlete of the Year honors today.  Three US athletes were named to the prestigious list. In addition, five other categories had US runners up. Congratulations to all who were nominated to this competition from around the world!

Here is a listing of the US honorees:

  • Female Overall Athlete of the Year:  Neringa Jakstiene (W56, Memphis, TN)
  • Male Sprinter of the Year:  Charles Allie (M72, Pittsburgh, PA)
  • Male Jumper of the Year:  Antonio Palacios (M53, Bloomington, IN)

Runner Up

  • Female Jumper of the Year Runner Up:  Neringa Jakstiene
  • Female Combined Event Athlete of the Year Runner Up:  Neringa Jakstiene
  • Female Thrower of the Year Runner Up:  Myrle Mensey (W70, St. Louis, MO)
  • Male Thrower of the Year Runner Up:  Quenton (Doug) Torbert (M68, Redlands, CA)
  • Male Combined Event Athlete of the Year Runner Up:  William Jankovich (M86, Racine, WI)

In addition to these honorees, the following US athletes were nominated by our region NCCMA and were considered by the WMA Awards Committee:

  • Female Middle Distance Athlete of the Year: Sabra Harvey (W70, Houston, TX)
  • Male Thrower of the Year:  George Mathews (M76, Edmonds, WA)
