Records Fall on first two days of the 2022 Masters Indoor Championships

11 RECORDS SET ON OPENING DAY – 15 ON DAY TWO OF USATF MASTERS INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS

NEW YORK CITY — Winners were crowned across more than a dozen age groups in four track events and five field events as well as the pentathlon on the first day of the USATF Masters Indoor Championships at the Armory.

Records were set in 11 events, including a world men’s 85-89 record of 9.63 in the 60m for Robert Whilden (Houston, Texas), who chopped .14 off the global standard set by Japan’s Hiroo Tanaka in 2017. Florence Meiler (Shelburne, Vermont/Sprinticity) tallied 3907 points in the women’s 85-89 pentathlon to beat Irene Obera’s world record by 90 points.

Sue McDonald (Santa Barbara, California/T.H.E. Track Team) got the proceedings started with a convincing win in the women’s 55-59 400m, clocking 1:04.31 to beat her own American record of 1:04.38. In the women’s mile race walk, Maryanne Daniel (Clinton, Connecticut) shattered her own 60-64 American record with an 8:51.24 to slice more than seven seconds off the mark she set three years ago. Karen Stoyanowski (Loomis, California/Sierra Race Walkers) also took a big chunk off the 65-69 record, walking 9:32.00 to cut 14.61 seconds off the previous best.

Not to be outdone, Richard Campbell (Orange, California/So Cal TC) bettered the men’s 75-79 American record by more than 14 seconds with a 10:01.95, and he needed every bit of that as Norman Frable (Ivins, Utah/So Cal TC) also went under the previous record with a 10:07.72 in second.

In the longest-running event to be contested at the Championships, masters superstar Kathryn Martin (Halesite, New York/Northport RC) added one more record to her tally with a 12:49.05 in the women’s 3,000m, knocking more than 17 seconds off the existing record. Tami Graf (Lusby, Maryland/Potomac Valley TC) demolished the women’s 85-89 record with a 26:41.89 that was almost 10 minutes better than the previous record.

Olympic race walker Michelle Rohl (Mansfield, Pennsylvania/Greater Philadelphia TC) claimed one of Martin’s records for herself, taking the 55-59 title in 10:22.74, 13.02 seconds faster than Martin ran in 2007. Rohl was the 1999 Pan American Games bronze medalist in the 20km race walk and competed at the 1992, 1996 and 2000 Games.

India Bridgette (Marietta, Georgia) broke a 15-year-old American record in the women’s 60-64 60m with her 8.78, .09 better than the existing AR. In the women’s 45-49 pentathlon, Rachel Guest (Surprise, Arizona/Southwest Sprinters TC) added another age group American record to the 35-39 and 40-44 marks she already holds, tallying 4024 points.

Day 2 Recap!

— Florence Meiler (Shelburne, Vermont/Sprinticity) set a world record and an American record as 15 world and American records fell on day two of the USATF Masters Indoor Championships at the Armory.
Meiler opened up the second day with yet another world record for her resume, clocking 18.73 in the women’s 85-89 60m hurdles to take more than five seconds off the existing record. In the next event on the track, Robert Paulen (Dewey Beach, Delaware/Potomac Valley TC) grabbed the men’s 85-89 American record in the 60m hurdles with a 14.33 to erase the previous AR of 15.10 set 14 years ago by Robert Maxwell.
In the women’s 40-44 60m hurdles, Ana Irizarry (Passaic, New Jersey/Shore AC) took .06 off the American record with a 9.02. The previous AR of 9.08 was set in 2005 by Joy Upshaw-Margerum.
After setting an American record yesterday in the 3,000m, Kathryn Martin (Halesite, New York/Northport RC) came back and claimed the world record in the women’s 70-74 mile, crossing the line in 6:31.25 to beat the existing WR of 6:45.8, set 10 years ago by Marie-Louise Michelsohn. Sascha Scott (Syracuse, New York/Syracuse TC) lowered the women’s 45-49 American record by .53 seconds to 4:59.19.
Meiler chalked up her second American record of the day in the long jump, spanning 2.22m/7-3.5 to tack on 18cm to the previous AR set by Irene Obera three years ago. Already the holder of the women’s 85-89 American record in the superweight throw, Gloria Krug (New Oxford, Pennsylvania/Philadelphia Masters) added the 90-94 AR with a throw of 4.53m/14-10.5.
In the men’s 60-64 shot put, Scott Eriksson (Plano, Texas) added 14cm to the American record with a 16.39m/53-9.25. Doubling back after her mile race walk American record yesterday, Maryanne Daniel (Clinton, Connecticut) broke the women’s 60-64 3,000m race walk AR, clocking 17:12.02.
Glenn Irion (Abingdon, Virginia/Greater Philadelphia TC) was one centimeter better than the existing American record in the men’s 65-69 high jump, clearing 1.63m/5-3.25. Genesee Valley Harriers , running with the team of Frank Gioia, William McMullen, Tim McMullen and Joseph Chimino, shattered the men’s 65-69 4x800m relay American record with a 12:30.38.
A world non-club record fell in the women’s 55-59 4x800m relay where Dominique Saint-Louis, Melissa Chiti, Sue McDonald and Judy Stobbe ran 10:37.94. Non-club American records went to the foursome of Peter Brady, Sherman Lau, Charles Novak and Mark Yuen with an 8:29.45 in the men’s 50-54 race, and the team of Hugh Sweeney, Hal Lieberman, Ron Pate and William Reiter, who ran 14:02.19 in the men’s 75-79 race.
The final record of the day came in the men’s 55-59 4x200m relay, where the Southwest Sprinters TC broke the American record with a 1:43.14. The squad was composed of David Gibbon, Clinton Aurelien, Marcus Shute and David Jones.
