2005 Masters Exhibition Events

Angela Herzner

Angela topped 6000 points setting the Ultraweights W45 record in addition an Indoor Shot record (13.61m) in NY. She won Gold in the Throws Pent, Ultra Pent and Superweight at the Throws Champs in Seattle, won Gold in the Shot, Weight and SuperWeight at Indoor Nationals in NY, and won Gold in the Shot, Weight, Hammer, and Discus with a Silver in Javelin at Outdoors in Lexington. Great throwing!

Dave Bickel

Dave is an athlete, a coach, a meet host, an official and friend to masters throwers. Creating a throws mecca in his backyard, Dave hosts frequent meets providing opportunities for athletes at all levels to compete. His integrity and attention to detail is what have people coming back for more competitions. Dave is a huge asset to all track and field especially in Arizona. He is the USATF Masters Records Sub-Committee chair and has done an outstanding job of clarifying and streamlining the process and transparency. He has also served on the Throws Committee for several years. Dave leads the Arizona Desert Throwers (AZDT) team. As an athlete, he has held 8 USATF Age Group Records. Thanks, Dave, for your dedication to throwers!

Scott Eriksson

Scott won Gold in Shot and Discus at the 2022 Outdoors Nationals, Gold in shot at the 2022 Indoor Nationals and won Gold in both Shot and Discus at WMA in Tampere! He set and holds the American Records for Discus and Shot (M60). And all this while battling cancer…outstanding throwing!

George Mathews

George has been a fixture in Masters Throwing, and in USATF organizations, for well over 40 years. He has been ranked #1 in the US 27 times, with 57 Gold medals in USATF Nationals/Throws Champs and 8 records. He also has 17 WMA medals in Hammer and Weight, with 2 records. Positions have included National Masters Chairman and member of USATF Board of Directors, 2000-2006; Masters National Site Selection Chair 1996-2000; Masters Association Chair in Pacific Northwest and San Diego; 2001 USATF National President’s Award; Co-Founder of Seattle Masters Athletic Club 1991 and many more. He has hosted/directed many invitational, association, regional and national Masters champ including the Throws Champs multiple times. Thank you, George, for your lifetime commitment!

Mary Roman

Mary was a prolific and talented thrower throughout her career, earning 74 Gold, 30 Silver and 8 bronze at USATF Nationals including 18 US records. With 13 #1 World rankings between 2005-2020, she won at WMA 3 gold, 5 silver and 3 bronze across all throwing events. She greeted everyone at meets with a smile and she was less impressed by her own athletic accomplishments but was thrilled for you when speaking of yours. Gracious, big-hearted, she was a friend for life of all she touched. Unfortunately, we lost Mary to Covid in the early 2000’s, but she lives on in all our memories.

2005 AT&T USA Indoor Track & Field Championships Exhibition

Men age 50 and up and women age 40 and up who are U.S. citizens may apply to compete in the masters men’s 400m or masters women’s Mile as part of the USATF Masters Invitational Program.

You must be a 2005 USATF member to compete in the meet. If you do not have a 2005 membership, please complete a membership application first. You must also be a U.S. citizen and meet the qualifying standards.

Qualifying Standards

To apply for entry into masters invitational events, you must have met the following standards during the 2004 or 2005 seasons.

USATF will try to take four athletes from the 50-54 age group and the top athlete from both the 55-59 and 60+ age groups if they meet or exceed the time standard. The race total will be six, and they could come from any combination of the three age groups.

The race will be a scratch race with no age grading used to determine placing.

Application Deadline and Entry Fee

The application deadline is 2/19/05 at 6:00 p.m. PT. If selected (see the “Process” below), you must pay the entry fee of $25, in cash or by check, at packet pick-up.

Application Process

Athletes interested in competing must submit an Application Form before the entry deadline.
Completion of an Application Form does NOT mean an athlete is entered in the meet.
USATF will review the Application Forms and, based on qualifying marks in rank order, select the athletes who may compete in the invitational events.
Athletes will be notified of their selection and will be expected to pay their entry fee at packet pick-up.
There will be no travel money available to athletes for this event.

Men age 40 and up who are U.S. citizens may apply to compete in the masters men’s mile as part of the USATF Masters Invitational Program. The race will take place at 5:05 p.m.

The qualifying standard is 4:38.00 (1 mile) or 4:15.00 (1,500m).

The field size is limited to 12.

The application deadline is April 16, 2005 at 8:00 p.m. PT.

Race Recap – Drake Relays

The 2005 Drake Masters Mile did not set a meet record for the first time in it’s 4-year history. The race temp. was 41 degrees, and there was a brisk wind on the backstretch. Rain was predicted for Saturday’s race, but athletes got lucky and it stayed dry for the race. David Nash a native Iowan and several-time National Champion served as the pacesetter for the 4th year in a row. John Hinton (42) of Fleet Feet Charborro jumped out to an early lead with rabbit and never relinquished the lead winning in 4:19.38. He was followed by Masters newcomer David Bailey (41) of Bowerman A.C.–Peter Hagelbach (40) of Fleet Feet Boulder and Kevin Paulk (44) of Bowerman A.C.–and Tim Wakeland (40) former All-American at Iowa State and Brett Darrington of the Future Track Club rounded out the field. The first year, the event was won in 4:16 by Colm Rothery, a World Champion from Ireland in cold and wet conditions. The next year, John Hinton broke the meet record running 4:13, then last year Tony Young set the existing meet record of 4:12.34.
