2002 Masters Exhibition Events

Angela Herzner

Angela topped 6000 points setting the Ultraweights W45 record in addition an Indoor Shot record (13.61m) in NY. She won Gold in the Throws Pent, Ultra Pent and Superweight at the Throws Champs in Seattle, won Gold in the Shot, Weight and SuperWeight at Indoor Nationals in NY, and won Gold in the Shot, Weight, Hammer, and Discus with a Silver in Javelin at Outdoors in Lexington. Great throwing!

Dave Bickel

Dave is an athlete, a coach, a meet host, an official and friend to masters throwers. Creating a throws mecca in his backyard, Dave hosts frequent meets providing opportunities for athletes at all levels to compete. His integrity and attention to detail is what have people coming back for more competitions. Dave is a huge asset to all track and field especially in Arizona. He is the USATF Masters Records Sub-Committee chair and has done an outstanding job of clarifying and streamlining the process and transparency. He has also served on the Throws Committee for several years. Dave leads the Arizona Desert Throwers (AZDT) team. As an athlete, he has held 8 USATF Age Group Records. Thanks, Dave, for your dedication to throwers!

Scott Eriksson

Scott won Gold in Shot and Discus at the 2022 Outdoors Nationals, Gold in shot at the 2022 Indoor Nationals and won Gold in both Shot and Discus at WMA in Tampere! He set and holds the American Records for Discus and Shot (M60). And all this while battling cancer…outstanding throwing!

George Mathews

George has been a fixture in Masters Throwing, and in USATF organizations, for well over 40 years. He has been ranked #1 in the US 27 times, with 57 Gold medals in USATF Nationals/Throws Champs and 8 records. He also has 17 WMA medals in Hammer and Weight, with 2 records. Positions have included National Masters Chairman and member of USATF Board of Directors, 2000-2006; Masters National Site Selection Chair 1996-2000; Masters Association Chair in Pacific Northwest and San Diego; 2001 USATF National President’s Award; Co-Founder of Seattle Masters Athletic Club 1991 and many more. He has hosted/directed many invitational, association, regional and national Masters champ including the Throws Champs multiple times. Thank you, George, for your lifetime commitment!

Mary Roman

Mary was a prolific and talented thrower throughout her career, earning 74 Gold, 30 Silver and 8 bronze at USATF Nationals including 18 US records. With 13 #1 World rankings between 2005-2020, she won at WMA 3 gold, 5 silver and 3 bronze across all throwing events. She greeted everyone at meets with a smile and she was less impressed by her own athletic accomplishments but was thrilled for you when speaking of yours. Gracious, big-hearted, she was a friend for life of all she touched. Unfortunately, we lost Mary to Covid in the early 2000’s, but she lives on in all our memories.

2002 USA Indoor Track & Field Championships Exhibition

The speed and power of runners over age 40 was given prominent display during the USATF Open Indoor National Championships on March 2 at the famed Armory in New York City.

The Masters Invitational Program, an ongoing series of exhibition races for runners 40 and older that are featured during major competitions for elite track and field athletes, offered the enthusiastic crowd a women’s 400 meter dash and men’s mile.

Rose Monday, 43, took control on the final lap of the women’s 400 and won in 59.96.

Mike Egle, 40, who came into the meet with the No. 1 indoor mile time this season, led wire to wire and won in 4:18.48. Monday, a three-time U.S. Olympic trials competitor and the 400 meter champion at last year’s Masters world championships in Australia, had too much speed for Denise McField, who led the first lap and finished second, and Jacqueline Board, who took third.

Carolyn Smith-Hannah, 51, finished fifth, and her time of 65.61 clipped about 1 second off the American record for women in the 50-54 age group. Smith-Hannah already held the age-group American records for the indoor 800 meters, 1500 meters and mile. Last year, Smith-Hannah pulled off a hat trick of national honors by being named the women’s 50-54 Athlete of the Year in track, cross-country and long-distance running by the Masters committee of USATF.

In the mile, pacesetter Isayah Okwiya came through the first 400 meters in 64 seconds. When he stepped off the track at the halfway point, Egle was leading a pack comprised of Steve Gallagher, Jamin Aasum and Peter Magill.

2002 Drake Relays Masters Exhibition

Des Moines, IA
April 26-27

The Master’ elite Mile at 2002 Drake Relays featured seven of the top U.S. milers as well as 2001 double World Champ at 800 and 1,500 meters Colm Rothery. Temperature at race time was 42 degrees, the track was wet and there was about a 15mph wind that impacted the entire field.

David Nash, the 2002 National indoor 800m champion (30-34) and coach at Morningside College, Sioux City, did a fine job setting the pace for the first 800. Rothery was through in 2:05.7 and the pack followed in 2:09 to 2:11. Rothery hit an outstanding split of 64 for his third quarter. Eith a chase pack of Magill, Egle and Fell it was clear they would not catch the leader. Rothery gallantly pushed the pace with 400m to go, but slowed to a 65 last quarter, which was amazing to watch given the conditions.

The race for 2nd through 4th was extremely exciting. Fell took the early lead on the final lap at the top of the backstretch. Egle and Fell stormed off the final turn onto the straight away, where Magill passed Fell 30 meters out, but could not quite get Egle.

Rothery said, “With good weather the sub 4:10 I was looking for would have been reasonable.” His 4:16.54 was a stellar performance for Colm’s first time on American soil. Even Mike Egle who had run 4:17 recently could only manage a 4:24.59 and Peter Magill ran 3:56.42 eight days later.

One competitor had this to say about the race “The rain we could see, the wind we could feel, the tornado warnings we could hear over the TV, but nothing prepared us for the Irish hurricane that swept away at the gun and shredded the finish tape long before anyone else turned into the final stretch.”

Peter Magill may have said it best “The people at Drake were fantastic. They fed us, housed us, and treated us like celebrities. Then more than 10,000 fans braved a rainstorm and tornado warnings to cheer us on. There was as much energy in the stadium as there was in the storm.”
