Toruń, Poland
March 26, 2023
Day One of the 9th World Masters Athletics Indoor Championships is in the books, and Team USATF had a banner first day. The US team of Masters athletes won a total of 17 medals and set three new American age group records (pending verification). This placed Team USATF Masters, with seven golds, six silvers, and four bronzes, in second place on the medal table, behind Poland (25 total medals) and just ahead of Germany (6 gold medals/25 total medals).
New American Age Group records were set by Robert Cahners (Naples, FL) in the M80 Weight Throw, April Lund (Bismarck, ND) capturing silver in the W40 3000m, and Lee Adkins (Milbrae, CA) in the M50 Long Jump. Cahners’s toss of 16.16m topped his 15.92m result at the Indoor Nationals in Louisville two weeks ago to extend his new American record. Lund’s time of 9:47.05 eclipsed the record previously held by Sonja Friend-Uhl (9:50.37), and Adkins’s jump of 6.54m took down the record held by Antonio Palacios (6.50m) who won the M55 Long Jump in Toruń today.
