(Virginia Beach, Va. -- December 2, 2010) At USA Track & Field's annual meeting today in Virginia Beach, Va., USATF president Stephanie Hightower presented the prestigious President's Award to five volunteers, including Bob Weiner, 63, of Accokeek, MD, whom she named first.
Hightower cited Weiner's efforts as National Masters Media Chair to publicize USATF's programs and event results for masters athletes (over 40) nationwide and worldwide on television, radio, magazines, and online. Weiner also contributes to USATF's masters website www.usatfmasters.org and maintains media coverage of masters athletics on his webpage www.weinerpublic.com/masters. Weiner actively competes for Potomac Valley Track Club and served as Local Organizing Committee chair for the 2009 USA Masters Indoor Track & Field Championships, held at Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex in Landover, Md., conducted by Potomac Valley Track Club.
Hightower also presented the President's Award to Julia Emmons, former executive director of Atlanta Track Club and Peachtree Road Race, USATF Women's LDR Chair (1990-1996), and director of the 1996 Atlanta Olympic marathons and race walks; Karen Krsak of Ohio, USATF General Competition Division, Associations Committee Chair; Bob Latham of Oregon, USATF Long Distance Running Championships Subcommittee Chair; and Steve Cuomo of Long Island, N.Y., USATF Chair, Athletics for the Disabled Committee.
USATF has 57 regional associations nationwide representing 100,000 athletes, including youth, open, and masters participants in running, jumping, throwing, and race-walking. The Washington, D.C., area is in the Potomac Valley Association.
