2008 REGION REPORT
Mid-America Masters Region Indoor and Outdoor Championship meets were held.
The indoor meet was held on February 10, 2008 at the US Air Force Academy indoor facilities. The meet was scheduled several weeks earlier than usual at the special request of the Academy. This rescheduling resulted in a few less competitors. The meet also served as the USATF Colorado Open and Masters Indoor Championships.
The outdooor Mid-American Champs were held on June 14-15 in Ewwardsville, IL. Communication with the meet director was almost zero. Results came over a month later after trying to contact the meet director by e-mail and phone.
To spread the championships around we scheduled the outdoor meet for Edwardsville, IL to give the eastern part of the region a better chance to compete. A meet was held in early June and some masters did compete. We have not been able to obtain te results of that meet, therefore, it's success is problematical. We were not able to attend as we had to be in California that weekend.
The Colorado Masters Track & Field Club hoseted its annual Rocky Mountain Masters Games track meet in August 23-24 and was a full success. We assisted this meet financially to proved for the masters competitors in the regin, a meet for them to become involved. We did have a good attendance from the Mid-America region and a number of other states further away. We were fortunated to have good weather.
Hosting a throwing clinic and hurdle instruction the day before the meet gave us new members for the Colorado Masters T&F and for newcomers a good reason to stay with the program. Jim Weed and his staff did an outstanding job to promote Masters Track & Field. Many athletes, new to the program, start out with throwing events, so the entries were way up. The great weather in Colorado added to the success. Other than that we just got notice that the Mid-America Masters Indoor Championships will be held on March 1, 2009 at the US Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. Using this outstanding military facility is always a bit of a worry since any change in military/security situations can change our plans for using the facility.
